DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 17, 2013) – The Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., honored Rodney A. Max as its 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year at ceremonies on Saturday.
Rodney Max, Principal
Mr. Max, a principal of Upchurch Watson White & Max, has a national mediation practice, is licensed to practice law in both Alabama and Florida, and has been based in South Florida since 2002.
He had a successful commercial litigation practice in Birmingham until 1992, when he became Alabama’s first fulltime mediator. He quickly expanded his mediation practice throughout the Southeast and has mediated more than 14,000 cases in 33 states; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico. His mediation practice extends to all areas of civil litigation, particularly mass and class actions and complex catastrophic injury or damage cases.
Throughout his career, Mr. Max has been active civically and a leader in human rights and Jewish causes, serving as chairman of the Alabama State Civil Rights Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He created the Coalition Against Hate Crimes and cofounded Camp Birmingham – an inner-city public/private partnership employing high school students as counselors and providing a camp experience for children who may not have been able to afford one.
In 2005, Mr. Max established the Rodney A. Max Mediation Fellowship at Cumberland, awarded each year to at least one student to recognize his or her achievement in the area of mediation.
