We jest that life insurance agents push insurance as the global panacea for whatever the client’s unmet needs may be.
But that mindset is not limited to insurance agents.
We in the helping professions are sore tempted to resolve client’s problems with what we’re licensed to charge for.
- The client’s problem is legal and requires competent counsel.
- The client’s problem is emotional or relational and requires therapy.
- The client’s problem is financial and requires accounting or investment expertise.
- The client’s problem lies within my professional ambit and requires me.
In the course of their education or training too many therapists become averse to business, law and finance. Hard-side realities get shunted aside in therapy.
In the course of our education or training, too many lawyers, accountants and financial advisors become averse to “soft-side” issues that appear to impede or sidetrack reasonable, logical, data-oriented solutions.
But clients don’t differentiate between their hard-sides and soft-sides. Clients’ problems may have legal, psychological, financial and relational aspects; but their dilemmas are not segmented into our convenient professional categories. The client’s life experience is a jumbled whole, jaggedly holistic.
I’m stuck. Can you help me find a better way?
Advisor distinctions between “hard-side” and “soft-side” aren’t useful to the client and can be hurtful. The therapist who dismisses a client’s financial anxieties as “delusional” can do harm by ignoring them. The lawyer who dismisses a client’s emotional hang-ups or relational tensions as “touchy-feely” hence irrelevant, can do harm by ignoring them.
I wish the hard-side/soft-side distinction didn’t exist. But it does so let’s deal with it. These resources reflect the best current thinking about critical “soft” or psychological issues that arise in everyday law practice – and elsewhere.
In them you will encounter very few technical terms and very little psychobabble. It’s best if you read or listen in the order listed below.
